Abstract:

The Chinese Students' Monthly(1906–1931) was the first English magazine published by Chinese students studying in the United States. Introducing various aspects of China to American society with a broad vision, an open attitude, and a strong sense of cultural subjectivity, it enhanced the understanding of China among relevant American academic circles. Through the “New Literature on China” column, this journal showcased recent Chinese books and articles on Chinese topics to the English-speaking world, enriching the bibliography for research by American Sinology. Through the active publication of special articles on the translation and study of China, it increased the American academic community's interest in and understanding Sinology. By using book reviews and specialized articles, it started a dialogue with American Sinology. Its objective and fair academic stance had, to some extent, corrected the wrong direction of the research of American Sinology and had a positive impact on the development of American Sinology. Its openness and inclusiveness to cultural exchange and academic dialogue made it a valuable model for contemporary scholarship.
